The Simon Communtiy is active in campaigning against the recent proposal by the coalition government to make squatting a criminal offence.
Clearly such legislation would have very negative effects on the most vulnerable people in society. It would be open to abuse as it would have the potential to empower unscrupulous landlords to oppress tenants. It would be extremely impractical to implement and it will tax the already stretched resources of the police and the rest of the criminal justice system. It will increase the number of homeless people significantly
We are joining in with a campaign against the proposal headed by Squatters Action for Secure Homes (SQUASH). Their campaign provides resources to raise awareness including a very good briefing report which you can download from their website.Placed by Admin on 03 Jun 2011
